Building a circular resource infrastructure and enabling a sustainable industrial society in harmony with the planet.
Around the world, three powerful megatrends are accelerating: environmental protection, resource circularity, and supply chain reconfiguration. As these trends reshape industries, critical challenges have emerged in areas such as PFAS remediation, LIB recycling, and rare earth processing. Addressing these challenges requires a new generation of separation and purification technologies that go beyond the capabilities of conventional approaches. Leveraging advanced separation technology originating from nuclear research, we are tackling these challenges by enabling the separation, recovery, and regeneration of valuable resources. Through this work, we aim to build the infrastructure for a circular resource economy and contribute to the realization of a sustainable industrial society that coexists in harmony with the planet. These challenges are not unique to Japan; they are shared by nations around the world. Emulsion Flow Technology offers an innovative, globally scalable solution capable of addressing both environmental and resource security challenges simultaneously.

The word “nuclear” often carries a cold and dangerous connotation. Yet at the same time, nuclear science—often called a “comprehensive science”—has generated countless advanced research achievements across diverse fields such as physics, chemistry, engineering, and biology. For many years, we have stood at the forefront of such nuclear research, engaging with a wealth of extraordinary technologies. However, one question has always lingered in our minds:
Why do so many of these remarkable technologies end without ever leaving the laboratory?
That question became our starting point.
Emulsion Flow Technologies Ltd. is a startup founded in April 2021 to bring to society the innovative solvent extraction technology “Emulsion Flow,” born at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). Emulsion Flow was originally developed to separate elements in spent nuclear fuel. In the course of research, we discovered a phenomenon that defied conventional wisdom: water and oil that mix perfectly and then separate perfectly. It was, in a sense, a miracle encountered in the realm of science. Captivated by this phenomenon, we decided to place our future in its potential.
Today, this technology is entering a new stage.
We are applying it to two major challenges: promoting resource circulation through lithium-ion battery (LIB) recycling, and removing environmental pollutants such as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). Both are global issues, causing serious impacts around the world at this very moment. Emulsion Flow offers a groundbreaking solution that achieves highly efficient, low-cost, and selective separation and recovery—tasks that conventional technologies struggled to accomplish. We firmly believe this technology is a key to addressing these global challenges.
Since our founding, we have actively brought in experts in process development and plant design to accelerate technological development. At the same time, we have assembled diverse talent in management, business development, and global marketing, continuing to grow by advancing both “technology” and “business.” Currently, we are also actively expanding into overseas markets through partnerships with trading companies and utilization of various support programs. Through the dissemination of our technology, we aim to contribute to solving resource and environmental challenges worldwide.
We see in this advanced technology, born from nuclear research, a value that goes beyond mere “technology.” It represents our unwavering commitment to a sustainable society and our aspiration to create a future where no one is left behind.
